The energy dilemma of the main brazilian Data Center companies

In an interview with BNamericas, ODATA’s Technical Design Director, Kelvin Tamura, shared his insights on how the Data Center sector, especially in Brazil, is preparing to meet the growing demand for data processing, which will increase with advances in artificial intelligence.
Alongside this development, there will also be an increasing need for energy redundancy to keep data centers operational 24×7, as well as demand for energy to ensure data processing and proper cooling of infrastructures. Coupled with this is the need for more sustainable energy sources.
In this scenario, “There is no easy solution on all fronts. Diesel, for example, remains the main source for backup. And generators are extremely important to ensure the functioning and reliability of sites in all of our datacenters,” explains Tamura.
Despite relying on diesel as backup, ODATA is committed to developing clean energy sources. We were the first Data Center provider in the Americas to invest in self-generated energy, acquiring a stake in the Assuruá IV wind farm in Bahia, making our energy consumption in Brazil 100% renewable.
